Austria Sees a Ten-Year Low in Asylum Applications in July

AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – In recent months, Austria has experienced a significant decline in asylum requests, with the number of first-time applications reaching the lowest point in a decade. In July 2026, the country recorded 244 initial asylum claims, marking the smallest monthly total since 2016. This represents a decrease of about 65% compared to 697 applications in July 2025, according to Austria’s Interior Ministry. When including both first and subsequent applications, the total number of asylum submissions for July was 840. These figures further highlight a sharp downward trend in asylum requests across Austria during the first seven months of 2026.

Austria asylum applications fall to decade low in July
Austria reported 244 first-time asylum claims in July, the lowest monthly level in a decade.

From January to July, Austria received a total of 5,743 asylum applications, a substantial drop from the 10,442 reported during the same period in 2025. This amounts to roughly a 45% decrease compared to the previous year. The totals encompass various application types, with the July figure of 244 specifically referring to new, first-time claims. The Austrian authorities publish monthly statistics that distinguish between these categories, offering clearer insights into fresh claims versus repeat filings.

Syrian nationals constituted the largest nationality group for asylum requests in July, with 267 applications, as reported in the link. The Ministry noted that most of these Syrian applications pertained to children born in Austria rather than newly arrived migrants. Additionally, Austria continues to enforce restrictions on family reunification for certain asylum cases. So far in 2026, authorities have documented 60 related entries, compared to 853 during the same period in 2025.

Decreases in Returns and Border Detentions

Throughout the first seven months of 2026, Austria reported more departures than initial asylum applications. By the end of July, 8,856 individuals had left the country through either voluntary departures or enforced removals. Of these, 4,615 were removals, and 4,241 were voluntary departures. The authorities also completed 392 transfers under the European Union’s Dublin system, which allocates responsibility for processing certain asylum claims among participating countries.

Border apprehensions along Austria’s eastern border in Burgenland have also seen a decline compared to previous years. From January to mid-August 2026, authorities recorded 339 apprehensions, a stark contrast to nearly 16,000 during the same period in 2023. The Austrian Interior Ministry attributes these figures to enhanced enforcement and cooperation measures with neighboring Hungary. Additionally, Austrian police have been involved in Operation Fox, a joint effort targeting migrant smuggling and illegal border crossings.

Continued Decline in Asylum Numbers for 2026

The figures from July follow a pattern of lower asylum numbers during the first half of 2026. Austria documented approximately 5,000 asylum applications over that six-month span, with departures surpassing incoming claims. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner has presented these statistics as part of the government’s latest migration overview. The country has also maintained voluntary return programs for Syrians, with 240 Syrian nationals leaving in July according to official reports.

These latest data points reveal a clear year-on-year decrease in both initial asylum claims and total filings. The 244 first-time applications registered in July represent the lowest level in a decade, as detailed in government statistics, while the total number of asylum applications for the month reached 840. The cumulative count from January to July, at 5,743, remains significantly below 2025 levels. Austrian authorities continue to compile these figures as part of their ongoing asylum and migration reporting, with separate data for applications, departures, transfers, and border apprehensions.
