BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Europe is on course for a historic year in wind energy deployment, having added 8.8 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity during the first half of 2026. This marks a 30% rise compared to the same period last year. As revealed in the latest industry data from WindEurope, the turbines commissioned so far generate enough power to supply about 7 million European households and displace fossil fuel imports equivalent to 25 liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers each year. The continent’s substantial activity over the summer months is accelerating its energy transition efforts, contributing to what is expected to be a record-breaking year in wind power installations.

Germany led the regional expansion in the first half of 2026, adding 3.4 GW, representing nearly 40% of all new wind capacity across Europe. Over 500 wind turbines were installed within Germany, including 423 onshore and 84 offshore units. Several other European nations, such as Denmark, Poland, Portugal, and France, also reported significant increases in capacity. Notably, Ukraine contributed more than 400 MW of operational wind capacity despite ongoing conflict conditions, and Belgium added 60 MW to its national grid.
According to WindEurope’s Autumn Report projections, total wind additions in Europe are expected to reach 24 GW by the end of 2026, setting a new record for yearly installations. This growth phase is viewed as a key milestone toward achieving a broader industry goal of 30 GW of annual additions in the 2030s. During the first half of the year, European wind farm investments totaled 9 billion euros, while national governments awarded over 17 GW through competitive auctions. An additional 26 GW are scheduled for tendering before the end of the year.
Germany Drives Regional Capacity Expansion With Over Three Gigawatts Installed
Despite the impressive installation figures, representatives of industry associations have issued warnings that ongoing structural bottlenecks could pose operational challenges to sustained growth. While Germany expedited its deployment with permits for over 9 GW of onshore wind capacity in the first half of 2026, other major markets such as Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Ireland experienced permit volume declines. Although Europe is heading toward a record year in wind power installations, industry leaders emphasize that bureaucratic delays in grid connection approvals threaten to delay future projects’ timelines.
WindEurope CEO Tinne Van der Straeten, commenting on the report, stated that 2026 might set an all-time record for wind capacity added, but cautioned that maintaining this momentum depends on future policy decisions. She highlighted that government actions on administrative permitting, auction design, grid infrastructure, and industrial electrification over the coming months will be decisive in sustaining the sector’s current growth rate.
Onshore Wind Turbines Constitute the Majority of New Capacity
To support ongoing expansion, industry advocates have outlined five key policy priorities for EU authorities and member states. These include simplifying permitting procedures, expanding regional transmission networks, directing Emissions Trading System revenues toward industrial electrification, and establishing a binding renewable energy target for 2040. Under current projections, total installed wind capacity in Europe is expected to reach 436 GW by 2030, providing 27% of the EU’s total electricity demand.
National ministries and European energy regulators are anticipated to review these policy proposals during upcoming ministerial meetings ahead of the winter heating season.
