Attention is now focused on the new plug-in solar regulations scheduled to take effect on August 27, 2026. These rules permit approved microgenerators to connect via a standard UK plug and household socket. Eligible products are limited to a maximum of 800 watts of alternating current output, must comply with Interim Product Specification version 2, and must operate safely within the local distribution network. Devices such as plug-in batteries and equipment that store electricity imported from household circuits are excluded from these regulations.
Safety regulations govern the use of plug-in connections
This legal update revises the Plugs and Sockets Safety Regulations 1994 along with the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002. The UK Parliament received the statutory instrument on July 17, just one day after ministers approved it. The amendment creates a specific exception to existing restrictions on plugs used with generating equipment. A notified body must verify that each plug adheres to the relevant BS 1363 standards. While product approval applies throughout the UK, the electricity safety amendment specifically covers England, Wales, and Scotland.
The interim specification establishes requirements for electrical design, mounting systems, fire safety, labelling, and consumer instructions. A technical study tested representative plug-in solar devices on domestic wiring in controlled conditions. Results showed stable operation with no evidence of sustained unsafe energisation or thermal hazards. The study also identified differences in export controls, electromagnetic compatibility, and overall product quality. These findings were instrumental in shaping the UK-specific safety standard necessary for legal market entry.
Retailers prepare for the availability of approved products
The government consultation attracted 466 responses from industry players, regulators, specialists, and the general public. More than 85% of respondents supported the interim specification, and most also endorsed the plug regulation changes. Participants included manufacturers, installers, network operators, electricians, academics, and consumer advocacy groups. Several raised concerns about older household wiring, noncompliant online products, and the need for clear instructions. Others emphasized the importance of distinguishing plug-in solar panels from plug-in battery systems.
Retailers such as B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl are preparing for the introduction of this new product category. This format caters to households unable to use conventional rooftop systems, including some renters and residents with balconies or outdoor spaces. Systems utilizing the new connection method cannot operate legally before August 27. From that date onward, only approved products within the 800-watt limit will be permitted to connect through a standard household socket. The capacity total for June does not include systems that will utilize the new plug-in framework.
