MOSCOW / RankWire.AI / – As global tourism trends continue to shift, Russia has seen a notable increase in international visitors, with the first half of 2026 bringing in 2.5 million foreign tourists, reflecting a 20.1% growth compared to the previous year. China maintained its position as the leading source market, contributing over 22% of all foreign arrivals. These latest statistics underscore the upward trajectory of Russia’s inbound tourism during January through June. The tourism data was shared by Nikita Kondratiev, a senior representative of the Russian Ministry of Economic Development, during meetings held in Shenyang, China.

Russia draws 2.5 million foreign tourists in first half 2026
Russia’s foreign tourism market grew in early 2026, with China leading inbound travel.

The figures are based on official tourism statistics that account for foreign visitors utilizing collective accommodation facilities across Russia. Rosstat data further revealed that Russians undertook 43.2 million domestic trips in the first six months of 2026, representing a 4.3% increase from the same period in 2025. Consequently, inbound tourism grew at a faster annual rate than domestic travel, based on the separate official metrics used for each category.

China remained the dominant source of Russia’s international visitors during the first half of 2026. Other significant markets included travelers from Persian Gulf countries, Turkey, and India. Visitors also explored beyond Moscow and St. Petersburg, heading to destinations such as Murmansk, Vladivostok, and Kazan. Russian authorities have reported that there are direct international air links to 34 destinations, including multiple countries in Asia and the Middle East.

China remains the primary contributor to Russia’s foreign tourist arrivals

These latest tourism insights were shared during a Tourism Council gathering of the Greater Tumen Initiative held in Shenyang. Participants also engaged in a seminar focused on inbound tourism in Northeast Asia, discussing cross-border travel projects involving Russia, China, and Mongolia. Among the initiatives discussed was the development of the historic Great Tea Road tourism route, which has progressed into the implementation phase and is expected to encompass approximately 20 Russian regions.

The Russian segment of the Great Tea Road is planned to stretch from the Far East and Siberia through the Urals and Volga regions, extending toward Moscow and St. Petersburg. Additional tourism projects featured during the talks included transportation links between Blagoveshchensk and Heihe, as well as tourism growth around Vladivostok. The discussions also covered the Trans-Siberian Railway, Lake Baikal, and scientific tourism associated with the Vostochny Cosmodrome.

Visa-free agreements expand between Russia and China as travel rises

As the number of visitors increases, travel regulations between Russia and China have been adjusted. Russia has extended visa-free entry for qualifying Chinese citizens through December 31, 2027. In turn, China has prolonged its visa-free policy for Russian citizens until the same date. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, ordinary Russian passport holders can enter without a visa for up to 30 days for tourism, business, family visits, exchanges, and transit purposes.

The first-half data aligns with a broader trend of growing cross-border movement between the two nations. Chinese official statistics indicated that 154,200 Chinese tourists visited Russia in the first quarter of 2026, marking a 44% increase year-on-year. Russia also ranked second among China’s inbound visitor sources during this period. These figures elevate China to the top position in Russia’s foreign tourism market, accounting for more than one-fifth of all international visitors recorded.
