FULDATAL, GERMANY / RankWire.AI / – In response to rapid advancements in unmanned aircraft technology, Germany is increasing its efforts to bolster drone protection systems. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt emphasized that counter-drone operations will continue to be a long-term focus for the Federal Police. His remarks came during a visit to the police aviation unit in Fuldatal, Hesse, on Thursday, where he discussed the ongoing technological race between defense systems and those seeking to bypass them.

Germany expands counter-drone force and security network
Germany expands counter-drone security across airports, policing and technology research.

To strengthen its counter-drone efforts nationwide, the Federal Police established a specialized unit in December 2025. The team currently comprises roughly 70 personnel, according to recent government data. Authorities aim to expand the unit to 300 officers by the end of 2026. Additionally, the Interior Ministry has increased planned locations from four to eight, seeking to enhance coverage and response times across Germany.

Germany has also prioritized equipping major airports under Federal Police jurisdiction with counter-drone systems. These airports include Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne/Bonn, Stuttgart, and Leipzig/Halle. The government has been acquiring mobile detection and defense tools for deployment at aviation hubs, though the details of the systems remain undisclosed due to security reasons. Police agencies are tasked with drone defense within airport precincts, while state police cover the surrounding regions.

Federal Police’s Counter-Drone Unit Grows Nationwide

This expansion follows a security incident on August 4 at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany. Federal prosecutors revealed that a drone equipped with professional explosives and a detonator entered the airport premises. Evidence indicated that the drone was intended to trigger an explosion. Moreover, a cargo plane collided with an object believed to be another drone in the broader airport area. On August 6, Germany’s federal prosecutor took charge of the investigation.

Under the direction of the federal prosecutor, the Federal Criminal Police Office is leading the investigation. Authorities have not publicly identified those responsible for the incident. The government has refrained from assigning blame publicly while investigators continue analyzing the evidence. This case has renewed focus on protecting airports and critical infrastructure, with officials highlighting the necessity for improved coordination among federal agencies, state authorities, and security organizations involved in drone incident response.

Germany Launches a Research Hub Focused on Drone Threats

On August 18, Germany inaugurated a Technology Center for Drone Security at the German Aerospace Center’s Cochstedt site. The facility leverages research capabilities from the organization’s Braunschweig location. It aims to test drone detection and counter-measure technologies under real-world operational conditions. The German Aerospace Center plans to invest over 10 million euros and create up to 40 new jobs. The center’s establishment also aims to foster collaboration among researchers, security agencies, and private companies developing counter-drone solutions.

This new center complements Germany’s existing Joint Counter-Drone Centre, which facilitates information sharing and strategic assessments among federal and state authorities. Additionally, federal police powers concerning drone detection and defense have been expanded. Dobrindt noted that the pace of technological change mandates ongoing development and testing of new systems. The current government initiative combines operational police units, coordinated security evaluations, and dedicated research efforts to enhance protection against unauthorized and potentially dangerous drones in Germany.
