    Rising global temperatures intensify drought conditions and accelerate moisture loss in Europe

    London / Euro Wire/ – A comprehensive scientific review attributes the current extreme dry spell across europe primarily to human activities, emphasizing how climate change worsens drought episodes. The study, conducted by an international coalition of climate scientists, identifies unprecedented heat levels as the main cause of these conditions, surpassing the effects of seasonal low rainfall. In the aftermath of a historic June heatwave, European countries are grappling with critically low river levels, widespread water restrictions, and devastating wildfires. The data reveals that a warming climate significantly speeds up the evaporation of moisture from land and water bodies, leading to a highly dry and volatile environment. Despite spring bringing less rainfall than usual, it was the temperature surges driven by climate change that pushed the drought into a critical phase.

    The study published by the World Weather Attribution group highlights how rising temperatures actively diminish natural water reserves. Mariam Zachariah, a researcher at Imperial College London, pointed out that the drought is not merely caused by reduced rainfall but by a warmer atmosphere creating larger moisture deficits on land. This dynamic means that drought risk escalates even in areas where precipitation remains relatively stable. Scientists explain that for each 1 degree Celsius increase in temperature, the atmosphere can hold about seven percent more water vapor. This increased capacity directly results in more intense evaporation from soils and vegetation, affecting the entire landscape.

    Using extensive weather data and sophisticated computer models, researchers quantified how the likelihood of these extreme weather events has shifted by comparing current conditions to a climate 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. The results show that soils in western Europe are now five times more prone to extreme dryness than in a world without human-induced warming. In eastern Europe, the chance of such soil moisture deficits has risen to 11 times higher. The analysis further revealed that the exceptionally high evaporative demand observed between April and June in western Europe was about 80 times more probable. Consequently, rainfall deficits that previously wouldn’t cause severe drought now lead to significantly drier soils.

    Calls for Immediate Global Emissions Reductions

    Dominik Schumacher, a scientist at ETH Zurich, underscored how early signs of soil drying are already evident in spring before summer begins. He explained that as temperatures climb, the atmosphere’s thirst for moisture intensifies rapidly, drawing water from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and soil. The combination of an unusually wet start to the year followed by extreme heat created ideal conditions for widespread wildfires. The rapid drying process primed the land for ignition, contributing to the severity of fires across multiple nations. The findings confirm that climate change-driven droughts are transforming traditional weather patterns into increasingly dangerous cycles across europe.

    The agricultural sector is experiencing unprecedented pressure due to the widespread loss of vital soil moisture. These drought conditions are causing historic crop failures across multiple countries. France is projected to have its lowest maize harvest in 50 years, indicating significant disruption to regional food production. Meanwhile, Romania has lost more than one million hectares of maize, further threatening the stability of the agricultural supply chain. These domestic shortages, combined with ongoing global conflicts, could lead to rising food prices and disproportionately impact low-income households.

    Projected Long-Term Warming Trends

    Hydrological impacts further exacerbate the economic damages, with abnormally low river levels disrupting vital cargo transport routes. Major shipping disruptions on key waterways reflect the increasing severity of water scarcity across the continent. Reduced river flows threaten energy production in regions heavily reliant on hydropower. Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed that June was the hottest on record in western Europe. Several countries are already enforcing emergency restrictions or temporary bans on non-essential water use to conserve dwindling supplies.

    Scientists warn that if global temperatures continue to rise, drought conditions could become even more frequent. Experts emphasize that such intense evaporative conditions are already occurring at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming. Should emissions push global temperatures to 2.8 degrees Celsius as projected, the likelihood of these conditions could double. Without swift and decisive emissions reductions, the continent faces a future dominated by relentlessly hot and arid summers.
